Steve Frew
Tampa Bay & Orlando, Florida
.Serving the greater Tampa Bay area for pitching lessons and occasionally supporting pitchers in Orlando, Steve Frew is the Assistant Coach and Pitching Coach at Eckerd College (NCAA Division II, St. Petersburg, FL). He returned to his alma mater with the desire to make a difference in the softball program. The impact was felt in his first season with the team. Even after losing six weeks of practice due to Hurricane Helene, the new coaching staff put together a record-breaking season for the Eckerd Tritons. Not only did they develop the Sunshine State Conference player of the year and All-American for the first time since 1993, but the team also had their best conference record in school history and was recognized as having the 4th biggest turnaround for a program in the country by improving from 13 wins in 2024 to 30 in 2025! Additionally, the pitching staff was #1 in strikeouts and boasted the conference leader in strikeouts for the first time in school history.
In 2024 with the University of Charleston, he helped lead the squad to the NCAA D2 World Series finishing with a program best 51-8 record and ranked #7 in the final national poll which was the highest ever ranking in the program’s history.
In 2023 and 2024, the two full seasons he managed the pitching staff, the Golden Eagles staff finished with a 1.77 followed by a 1.89 ERA (13th best in the NCAA both seasons) and a WHIP of 0.98 and then 0.94 (5th and 3rd best in the NCAA). The staff also twirled 38 shutouts the past two seasons. In these consecutive years, the Golden Eagles set (18) and reset (20) the university’s shutout record that stood since the 1981 season.
As the pitching coach at Rollins, since 2006 (16 seasons at Rollins College), the pitching staff has finished with an ERA ranked among the top 10 NCAA schools 13 times including earning the top ranking in the NCAA twice (2011 & 2019).
Numerous pitchers on his staff appeared at the top of the NCAA national leader board in multiple categories. In the same span of 16 seasons (2006-21), 14 of his pitchers finished ranked in the national top 10 in ERA. Frew’s ability to develop pitchers can be exemplified throughout his career.
The most recent transformation occurred in 2025 during his first season with the Eckerd. The year prior to Frew’s arrival, Brandilyn Reymer had a mediocre season striking out 4.71 per 7 innings, producing a 1.73 strikeout to walk ratio, surrendering a homer every 11 innings, and allowing an opponent batting average of .299. Reymer’s first season with Coach Steve saw record-breaking improvements. Hitters struggled against her as opposing batting average dropped to .221, and allowed a homer only every 54.9 innings! Her ability to get swings and misses was clear with a jump to 8.63 strikeouts/7 innings and her strikeout to walk ratio more than doubled to 3.62. Reymer crushed Eckerd’s single-season record for strikeouts and was the first pitcher ever to lead the Sunshine State Conference in strikeouts.
Another such transformation took place in 2018. Abby Summers struggled in her first season at Rollins with an ERA of 4.99 while allowing more than a hit an inning, but after Frew incorporated mechanical adjustments, Summers was arguably one of the most dominant pitchers in the country as she finished the season with a 1.15 ERA (NCAA’s 7th best), striking out 10.2 per seven innings (3rd best in the NCAA), and allowed only 2.75 hits per seven innings (Best in the NCAA). Teams only were able to muster a batting average of .115 throughout the season against her.
Through the 2025 season, “Coach Steve” has assisted in training players that were honored with 27 All-American awards, 98 regional awards, and 147 conference awards. Frew has also served as the assistant director of Michelle Frew's summer fastpitch camps and clinics for more than two decades.
Frew has been developing younger pitchers in camps, clinics, and through pitching lessons for two decades. An active sports enthusiast, Frew has served as an official scorer for the Orlando Rays minor league baseball team and at Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports events including the WNBA. Frew also filled the role of spotter/statistician for Florida Citrus Sports NCAA Bowl Games and the Orlando Predators Arena Football Club.
A 1988 graduate of Eckerd College where he was a pitcher on the baseball team, Frew received a master's degree from Slippery Rock University in 1991 and a doctoral degree in higher education from Nova Southeastern in 2001. Frew is employed by Phoenix Defense as an Integration and Test lead. Steve and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Erin and Dylan.
From Steve: “Having been around the since she was an infant, our daughter showed signs of being interested in pitching at an early age. She started modeling the college girls and when she started playing organized ball, she wanted to get better. As parents, we wanted to find a coach for her. . . We wanted her to learn from more than just her parents.
We tried different coaches in the area but never felt that there was a “right” fit for her. With more experience with established, college players, we knew that certain skill sets made pitchers successful. However, as I worked with our daughter, I did not connect with some of the traditional ideas and drills such as wrist snaps and t-drills. When we came across the Tincher program online, we really liked the idea of fluid dynamics and the physics behind it. When we learned that Angela was living in our community and area giving lessons, we sought her out.
Our daughter immediately connected with Angela, and while catching for her, I connected with her too. Certain “darker” areas of pitching mechanics were becoming clearer, and not only did my daughter improve, my own coaching skills did as well. Our daughter became smoother and her speed continues to improve. I was able to add several techniques to my “tool belt”.
Angela may not be here in Orlando anymore, but the time she gave to our family sparked my relationship with Denny. I began working (and learning) with him at different conventions and clinics up and down the East coast. Wow! What a wealth of scientifically-backed information! The Tincher pitching model and the philosophy related to fluid dynamics are strong and sound.”
Here is what Denny says about Steve:
Steve is very experienced, analytical, and dedicated to the sport. The very first time he met with our Instructor group, he quickly gained a level of trust and respect that made people want to hear the things he had to say. Steve has that unique ability to break big problems down into easily manageable parts. It makes kids feel no issue is too difficult and no goal is too high. We are excited to have him representing us in Florida.
